Song of the Day #132: Getting There

Flying Lotus – Getting There (feat. Niki Randa)

After years of hopes and dreams, this summer I finally made it to the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. In case you aren’t familiar with Coachella, this is the mother of all music festivals at this point in time. With hundreds of performers spread across the 3-day festival, it was difficult to figure out who to be most excited about. The event was completely star-studded with headliners like Snoop & Dre (plus hologram 2Pac), Radiohead, and The Black Keys. But surprisingly, it would be the acts on the second and third tier of the lineup that would really blow my mind. Chief among those was Flying Lotus.

Flying Lotus

From his first song (Hudon Mohawke – Furnace Loop), the vibe in the 10,000+ person tent was absolutely off the meter. And this wasn’t a mainstream dance DJ style knock-your-ears-in-with-beats performance. It was subtle, nuanced, and was filled with pauses for dramatic effect. Like Flying Lotus.

He played this song, Getting There, almost 6 months before the release of his new album, Until the Quiet Comes. Each time I listen to it I’m reminded of the Blade Runner Soundtrack produced by Vangelis which to this day remains one of my favorite albums of all time.
